Why do people fight so much on the price of a car?

Why do people think I'm a liar when I tell them that we really aren't making money on something when in all honesty, we aren't?

Why can people justify paying full price for an iPod when they know DAMN WELL it doesn't cost that much to make and that apple is making like 99% profit?!

I'm starting to really dislike people. And I'm starting to really dislike my job.

God forbid a company wants to make a profit on the items they're selling. That doesn't make us bad.

Several points.

First, the car industry has conditioned us to believe that the price posted, (or stated), is higher than the fair price. And they've conditioned us to believe that car salesmen always lie. This is especially true if you look at American car companies rather than, say, Honda or Toyota, who tend to sell for sticker or even a little above. Everyone wants to believe that they got a good deal, or at least a fair price. With Honda, etc, that tends to be sticker and folks tend to know that. With American cars, it's really hard to know the right price, and you certainly can't trust the salesmen to tell you.

Second, there's competition. Two different car dealers, even ones selling the same model cars, will compete with each other for the sale. That doesn't happen with ipod. People want ipods. Ipods have A Price that doesn't really change much. And the alternatives to ipods are all pretty much inferior. If you want an ipod, you pay The Price. There's no dickering. If you want another product, you may pay less, but it's not an ipod.

Third, the price. Ipod's cost a few hundred dollars. 1% price flex on a few hundred dollars is a few dollars. Hardly worth my time to drive to another store. If a car costs 50k, then 1% on a car price is worth $500. That's worth some of my time.

I can think of at least 7 other differences but these are key ones.
