they've given me no written warnings and the telling me they didn't need me anymore wasn't written either. It's only ever been verbal. And I've never heard of being given 2 weeks notice to be fired. I've only ever heard the person leaving having to give 2 weeks

When I'm twittering on about the 2 weeks' notice, I'm referring to the pet place. Unless they stated that they were firing you for bad performance (and, in which case, they're in the same boat as S&S and need to prove that they had a case against you for fair dismissal) then you *might* be entitled to 2 weeks' notice/pay in lieu of notice when laid off.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the pet place just said "We're letting you go because we wanna/there's not enough work" not "we think you're lousy, we're firing you." If it's the former, then file your UI claim right away (you never know) and do some research regarding your right to notice (as I said, I suspect such things might only be a courtesy, but CA employment law covers so many things...). If it's the latter, threaten to sue 'em for unfair dismissal - and look into your options for doing so on the lawyer's nickel. ;)
